Road Conditions in the Mt. Rainier Area

As of Wednesday, Sept 17th, 2008

  • Chinook Pass/Hwy 410 (Chinook Pass): OPEN.
    • The east section of Hwy 410 over Chinook Pass typically closes in late November.
    • In early December, the WA DOT closes Hwy 410 at the Northeast park boundary near Crystal Mountain.
  • Cayuse Pass/Hwy 123 (Cayuse Pass): OPEN.
    • NOTE: Road closure for Hwy 123 has been lifted. Travelers should anticipate a maximum of 20 min. delays Mon-Fri through late Sept.
    • The WA DOT closes Hwy 123 for winter in early December.
  • Stevens Canyon Road: OPEN. Closes Nov. 1.
  • Sunrise Road: OPEN.
    • Sunrise road closes at the White River campground junction every night beginning in late September and re-opens each morning, weather permitting. The road to Sunrise will close at the Hwy 410 intersection on October 14 or at the first heavy snowfall.

OTHER OPENINGS - CAMPGROUNDS/VISITOR CENTERS:

  • Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise: NOW OPEN DAILY for the summer season.
  • October 10th: the New Visitor Center at Paradise will open.
  • Ohanapecosh campground: OPEN (opened May 23rd.)
  • Cougar Rock campground: OPEN (opened June 13th.)
  • White River Campground: OPEN (opened July 3rd.)
  • The Ohanapecosh Visitor Center: OPEN (opened June 13th.)

OTHER ROADS OF INTEREST:

  • Paradise Valley Road: OPEN.
  • Skate Creek Road: OPEN. Travelers will encounter some gravel patches and narrow shoulders so please drive with extra caution.
  • White River Road to Campground: OPEN.
  • Westside Road at Nisqually Entrance is open for foot/ski traffic only.
  • Carbon River Road: open to hikers and bicyclists only.
  • Mowich Lake Road: OPEN. Closes October 20.

OPEN DAILY:

  • Nisqually Entrance to Longmire.
  • Longmire to Paradise: road closes nightly from Nov 1 through winter. Road reopens every morning after snow removal. Call 360-569-2211 for latest updates.
