Road Conditions In and Around Mt. Rainier National Park

  • SPECIAL WINTER REQUIREMENT:
    During the winter season (Nov 1 - May 1), all vehicles are required to carry tire chains when traveling in the park. This requirement applies to all vehicles (including 4-wheel and all-wheel-drive), regardless of tire type or weather conditions.

    HIGHWAYS:

    • Cayuse Pass/Hwy 123: CLOSED
      • Cayuse Pass is now closed for the season from milepost 5.4 near Stevens Canyon Road to milepost 16 near the intersection of SR 410 and SR 123.
    • Chinook Pass/Hwy 410: CLOSED
      • Chinook Pass is now closed for the season from milepost 74.5 near Morse Creek to milepost 57.5 near Crystal Mountain Blvd.

    ROADS INSIDE THE PARK:

    • Carbon River Road: OPEN TO THE ENTRANCE
      • Only bicycle and pedestrian traffic is permitted beyond the entrance.
    • Longmire to Paradise: OPEN DAILY
      • The gate at Longmire closes nightly to uphill traffic at 5:00pm.

    Due to the rehabilitation of Stevens Canyon Road, it will be necessary to close the east end of Stevens Canyon Road from the gate located just west of the Grove of the Patriarchs to just east of the popular Backbone Ridge Viewpoint from September 6, 2011 to when the road is shut down for the winter (October 24th in 2010).

    Visitors can access the Reflection Lakes area, Box Canyon and Backbone Ridge Viewpoint area and adjacent trailheads from the west during the 2011 closure period.

    Visitors are encouraged to access the Paradise area from the southwest via the Nisqually Entrance. Visitors traveling from the east via SR 410, SR 123, and US 12 who wish to visit the Paradise area have two detour options: Via Gifford Pinchot National Forest Service Road 52 (Skate Creek Road) beginning on US 12 in Packwood and ending on SR 706 east of Ashford; or the longer route via SR 7 beginning in Morton on US 12 and ending on SR 706 at Elbe.
